Main Street Elm City today. (Photo by Scott Younkin) The sign in the display window of the small Shoe Repair Shop was a simple, sizeable piece of a pasteboard box cut into a square and pressed up against the glass to be easily read by all who walked on the sidewalks of Main Street. The Sign read: “WE DOCTOR SHOES. WE ‘HEEL’ THEM. WE SAVE THEIR ‘SOLES’. AND WE ATTEND THEIR ‘DYING’.” It was a simple sign, but it was a conversation piece and brought a smile to many faces.
